Comparison review
The Sony Xperia 1 is slightly better than the Google Pixel 3a XL, having a general score of 82.6 against 78.9. The Sony Xperia 1 construction has the same thickness than the Google Pixel 3a XL, but it is just a little bit heavier. Xperia 1 features a brighter display than Google Pixel 3a XL, because it has a quite larger display, a way higher 1644 x 3840 resolution and a way higher count of pixels per inch of screen.
Sony Xperia 1 features a bit superior CPU than Google Pixel 3a XL, and although they both have a Octa-Core processor, the Sony Xperia 1 also has a higher amount of RAM. Google Pixel 3a XL and Xperia 1 both feature quite similar cameras, because although the Xperia 1 has a smaller sensor shooting lower quality images, a back camera with less mega pixels and a worse (4K) video resolution, it also counts with a larger aperture for better low light photography.
The Sony Xperia 1 counts with a way bigger storage capacity to install games and applications than Google Pixel 3a XL, because it has a slot for SD memory cards that allows a maximum of 512 GB and 128 GB internal storage capacity. Google Pixel 3a XL features a bit longer battery duration than Xperia 1, because it has 3700mAh of battery capacity.
Although Sony Xperia 1 is a better device, it costs a lot more money than Google Pixel 3a XL, and it doesn't have such a good relation between it's price and quality as Google Pixel 3a XL. So if you need that extra features, you can buy the Sony Xperia 1, otherwise you can save some dollars and get the Google Pixel 3a XL, letting go some features and specs.
