The HTC One M9 is a little bit better than Sony Xperia Z3, having a 77.7 score against 77.3. Both of these phones have Android OS (Operating System), but HTC One M9 has a more recent 5.0 version and Sony Xperia Z3 has Android 4.4.4, providing you a couple additional features and performance tweaks. HTC One M9's body is a little thicker but a little bit lighter than Sony Xperia Z3, and both of them were released with only a couple months difference.
The HTC One M9 has a bit faster processing unit than Xperia Z3, and although they both have a 3 GB RAM, the HTC One M9 also has a faster graphics processor, a larger number of cores (although slower) and a 64-bits processing unit. Sony Xperia Z3 counts with just a bit better display than HTC One M9, because although it has a just a bit inferior pixels count per inch in the display, and they both have the same exact resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels, the Sony Xperia Z3 also counts with a little bigger display.
Xperia Z3 takes just a bit better photographs and videos than HTC One M9, and although they both have the same 30 fps video frame rate and the same 3840x2160 video definition, the Xperia Z3 also has a larger diafragm aperture to take better captures and videos in poorly lited environments, a back-facing camera with more mega-pixels and a larger sensor.
The Xperia Z3 and HTC One M9 both feature extremely similar storage capacity to install applications and games, both have a SD card slot that holds up to 128 GB and the same internal storage capacity. Sony Xperia Z3 counts with just a little bit longer battery performance than HTC One M9, because it has a 3200mAh battery capacity against 2840mAh.
Although HTC One M9 is a better device, it is a bit more expensive than the Sony Xperia Z3, and it doesn't have such a good price and quality relation as the Sony Xperia Z3. So if you need that extra features, you can buy the HTC One M9, otherwise you can save a couple dollars and buy the Sony Xperia Z3, giving up a couple features and specifications.
