The Huawei Mate X is much better than the Huawei Mate 9 Pro, with a general score of 89.4 against 78.7. Both phones in this review use Android operating system, but Huawei Mate X has newer 9.0 Pie version and Huawei Mate 9 Pro has Android 8.0 Oreo, so it gives some extra features. The Huawei Mate X body is notably newer than Huawei Mate 9 Pro's, although it is noticeably thicker and heavier.
The Huawei Mate 9 Pro features just a bit better screen than Huawei Mate X, because although it has a quite lower 1440 x 2560 pixels resolution and a much smaller screen, it also counts with a greater pixels density. Huawei Mate X has a bit better CPU than Huawei Mate 9 Pro, and although they both have 8 processing cores, the Huawei Mate X also has a higher amount of RAM.
Huawei Mate X counts with much more storage capacity to store more games and applications than Huawei Mate 9 Pro, because it has 512 GB internal memory. The Huawei Mate 9 Pro has a bit better camera than Huawei Mate X, although it has a tinier diafragm aperture which is not nice for low-light photography and video, a camera in the back with much less megapixels resolution and a much tinier sensor.
The Huawei Mate X features a bit better battery performance than Huawei Mate 9 Pro, because it has a 4500mAh battery size.
Although Huawei Mate X is a better device, it costs a lot more money than the Huawei Mate 9 Pro, and it doesn't have such a good relation between it's price and quality as Huawei Mate 9 Pro. If you are trying to save a few dollars, you can get the Huawei Mate 9 Pro, and give up a few features and specifications, but you will get the most with your savings.
