These phones work with Android OS, but the Galaxy Note 5 has 5.1 version and Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 has Android 10. Despite of the fact that Galaxy Note 5 is extremely older than Xiaomi Redmi Note 9, it's body is somewhat thinner and lighter.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 features a bit better camera than Galaxy Note 5, and although they both have the same 1920x1080 video definition and the same 30 frames per second video frame rates, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 also has a much larger back-facing camera sensor taking much higher quality pictures and videos, a larger aperture to take better low light images and video and a camera with a lot better 48 megapixels resolution.
The Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 has a much bigger memory capacity to install applications and games than Galaxy Note 5, and although they both have equal 64 GB internal memory capacity, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 also has an external memory card slot that allows a maximum of 128 GB. The Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 features a much better battery lifetime than Galaxy Note 5, because it has a 67% larger battery capacity.
Although Samsung Galaxy Note 5 is a better device, it costs a lot more money than Xiaomi Redmi Note 9, and it doesn't have such a good relation between it's price and quality as Xiaomi Redmi Note 9. So if you want that extra features and specs, you can buy the Samsung Galaxy Note 5, otherwise you can save a couple dollars and buy the Xiaomi Redmi Note 9, giving up a couple specs and features.
