The Moto Z3 Play has a general score of 76.3, which is a little bit better than the Sony Xperia Z1's 72.8 score. The Moto Z3 Play body is a lot newer, a lot thinner and just a little lighter than Sony Xperia Z1. Sony Xperia Z1 has a little bit better processing power than Moto Z3 Play, because although it has 2 GB lesser RAM and a lower number of cores , it also counts with a graphics processor.
Sony Xperia Z1 features a more vivid display than Moto Z3 Play, because although it has a little bit smaller display and a little bit worse resolution of 1920 x 1080px, it also counts with a quite higher display density. Moto Z3 Play features a very superior storage capacity to install games and applications than Xperia Z1, because it has an external memory slot that holds a maximum of 1,95 TB and 32 GB more internal storage.
Motorola Moto Z3 Play's battery performance is just as good as the battery duration in Xperia Z1. The Moto Z3 Play takes just a bit better photos and videos than Xperia Z1, because although it has a camera with lot less mega-pixels and a tinier sensor taking less light and duller colors, it also counts with a bigger aperture and a way better 3840x2160 (4K) video resolution.
Although Moto Z3 Play is a better device, it is a lot more expensive than the Xperia Z1, and it doesn't have such a good price and quality relation as Xperia Z1. So if you need that extra specs and features, you can buy the Moto Z3 Play, else you can save some money and buy the Xperia Z1, resigning a couple features and specifications.
