Sony Xperia 1's design is a lot newer than the Samsung Galaxy A5's, although it's heavier and somewhat thicker. Sony Xperia 1 has a bit superior processor than Galaxy A5, because although it has doesn't have an additional graphics processor and a 32-bits processor against 64-bits, it also counts with 4 GB more RAM and a higher number of cores.

The Xperia 1 features a better display than Galaxy A5, because it has a much better 1644 x 3840 resolution, a way higher pixel density and a bigger screen. Xperia 1 counts with a very superior storage for apps and games than Galaxy A5, because it has a SD memory card expansion slot that admits up to 512 GB and more internal memory.

The Xperia 1 counts with a much longer battery duration than Samsung Galaxy A5, because it has a 3330mAh battery size instead of 2300mAh.
