Although Samsung Galaxy Note9 is way newer than Xperia Z3+, it is noticeably heavier and a lot thicker. Galaxy Note9 counts with a quite superior processing power than Sony Xperia Z3+, because it has a greater number of cores (and they are faster) and 3 GB more RAM.

The Xperia Z3+ has a bit sharper screen than Galaxy Note9, although it has a lot worse resolution of 1920 x 1080, a little bit worse pixels number in each inch in the screen and a little smaller screen. The Samsung Galaxy Note9 features a lot bigger memory for games and applications than Sony Xperia Z3+, because it has a slot for an SD memory card that admits up to 512 GB and 96 GB more internal memory capacity.

The Sony Xperia Z3+ counts with a bit better camera than Galaxy Note9, because although it has worse 30 fps video frame rates and a lot tinier camera aperture which is not favorable for shooting photographs in low-light environments, and they both have the same 3840x2160 (4K) video definition, the Sony Xperia Z3+ also counts with a larger back-facing camera sensor shooting higher quality videos and pictures and a lot more megapixels camera in the back.
