Xperia 1 III is way better than the Xiaomi Redmi Note 8, getting a overall score of 93.3 against 74.6. These phones use Android OS (Operating System), but Xperia 1 III has newer 11 version and Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 has Android 10 version, giving some nice extra features and increased performance. The Xperia 1 III is a newer cellphone, and it's also a little lighter and a little bit thinner than Xiaomi Redmi Note 8.
The Xperia 1 III counts with a much better screen than Xiaomi Redmi Note 8, because it has a bit bigger display, a way higher 1644 x 3840 pixels resolution and a much better screen pixel density. Sony Xperia 1 III counts with a bit more powerful processing unit than Xiaomi Redmi Note 8, and although they both have a Octa-Core processor, the Sony Xperia 1 III also has a larger amount of RAM.
The Sony Xperia 1 III counts with a superior storage for applications and games than Xiaomi Redmi Note 8, because it has a slot for SD memory cards that holds a maximum of 1 TB and more internal memory capacity. The Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 counts with a little bit better camera than Sony Xperia 1 III, because although it has a smaller aperture, worse 30 fps video frame rate and a smaller sensor which provides a lower photo and video quality, and they both have the same video resolution, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 also counts with a back-facing camera with much more megapixels.
Xperia 1 III features a bit better battery performance than Xiaomi Redmi Note 8, because it has a 4500mAh battery capacity.
Although Sony Xperia 1 III is a better device, it is way more expensive than the Xiaomi Redmi Note 8, and it doesn't have such a good quality/price relation as the Xiaomi Redmi Note 8. So if you want that extra features and specs, you can buy the Sony Xperia 1 III, otherwise you can save a couple dollars and buy the Xiaomi Redmi Note 8, resigning some specifications.
