Acer ICONIA TAB A501 Review

Score: 6.27/10
50.H6002.001 Acer Iconia Tab A500 A501 Tablet DC IN CABLE

Acer ICONIA TAB A501 is a decent tablet launched in March 2011, counting with a big size 10.1" touch-screen, a fast 1 gigahertz Dual-Core processing unit, a 5 mega-pixels back facing camera and a 2 MP front-facing camera. That's everything we have to say? No, it's just the introduction.

Acer decided to equip this tablet device with a good performance 1 GHz Dual-Core processor and 1 GB of RAM memory. The Acer ICONIA TAB A501 has a quite large 16 GB internal storage and an external SD slot, enough to install a couple hundred apps and games without any problem.

The Acer ICONIA TAB A501 is a little thick compared to nowadays tablets, with its 0.52 inches thickness. Even though the Acer ICONIA TAB A501 just has 10.24" long and 6.97" wide, it still manages to hold a 10.1 inches screen. Acer appears to have forgotten about weight optimization in this 25.75 ounces tablet.

This tablet has two cameras, a 5 MP back side camera and a 2 mega-pixels front side camera. This camera also includes flash and auto-focus.

Acer designed this tablet with a good level 10.1-inches display, and a resolution of 800 x 1280 , which makes all images and videos look quite good. This display uses LCD capacitive technology, and has multi-touch detection.

The Acer ICONIA TAB A501 comes with a large 3260 mAh Li-Ion non-removable battery that would have been good if this tablet didn't require so much energy for its screen and processor. A key issue to evaluate is that this tablet's battery isn't removable so you can't change it when it starts to get older, leaving no choice but to buy a new tablet or hopefully take it to an expert who can open the tablet and switch the battery.

This tablet provides wi-fi capability (but it can't be shared with other devices around, acting as a mobile hotspot), HSPA+ (4G) data connection, that is not as fast as LTE-A or LTE 4G networks and 3G fast internet connection, over HSDPA, HSUPA, UMTS and EDGE technologies. This tablet works with a SIM card for GSM carriers.

This tablet also includes a handful of cool characteristics like Bluetooth and GPS (Global Positioning System), and lots of sensors like Light Sensor, Proximity Sensor, Accelerometer, Gyroscope and Compass.

This tablet is not very cheap considering it is priced $ 215, and other similar tablets are being sold for much less than that.
