The Galaxy Note9 is better than the Xperia XZ2, with an 87.1 score against 79.1. Even though Galaxy Note9 and Xperia XZ2 were released with only 5 months difference, the Galaxy Note9 design is extremely thinner but also a little heavier. The Samsung Galaxy Note9 has just a little better hardware performance than Sony Xperia XZ2, and although they both have 8 CPU cores, the Samsung Galaxy Note9 also has more RAM.
The Xperia XZ2 has a little sharper screen than Galaxy Note9, although it has a lot lower 1080 x 2160 pixels resolution, a just a little less pixels per screen inch and a quite smaller display. The Samsung Galaxy Note9 features much more storage to store more games and applications than Sony Xperia XZ2, because it has more internal storage and an external memory slot that allows a maximum of 512 GB.
Sony Xperia XZ2 shoots just a bit better photos and videos than Galaxy Note9, because although it has a lot smaller aperture, and they both have the same video frame rate and the same (4K) video resolution, the Sony Xperia XZ2 also counts with a back camera with way more megapixels and a bigger sensor which gives a higher photo and video quality.
The Galaxy Note9 counts with improved battery life than Xperia XZ2, because it has 4000mAh of battery capacity.
